Wisp, better known as Rainbow Brite [Bettina Bush] is an orphan from Rainbowland that is taken Earth by a magical sphere of light, to bring color to a dark world. She is hunted by the Evil One [voiced by Pat Fraley] and his minions: Murky Dismal [Peter Cullen] and his brown sprite Lurky [Pat Fraley], who attempt to steal her Color Belt - the only tool that can bring back color...while using a machine that creates "gloom clouds" that blacken color.

Together with her horse Starlite [Andre Stojka] and her fluffy white sprite Twink [Robbie Lee], she visits her friend Brian, who uses a Rainbow Key to bring her to Earth when needed. Also featured are her friends from Rainbowland, the seven Color Kids: Buddy Blue [Pat Fraley], Shy Violet [Robbie Lee], Lala Orange [Robbie Lee], Indigo [Robbie Lee], Canary Yellow [Mona Marshall], Patty O'Green [Mona Marshall] and Red Butler [Mona Marshall]. Each color kid represents a particular color, and mines special crystals that are later turned into Star Sprinkles.

A multitude of other characters were introduced throughout the series, including Stormy [Marissa Mendenhall] and her horse Skydancer - who oversees clouds and storms, Moonglow - a sprite who illuminates the night sky, Tickled Pink [Rhonda Allman]- an undetermined Color Kid in charge of the color pink, and Puppy Brite & Kitty Brite - Rainbow's pets.

The full-feature movie "Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer" was released on November 15, 1985, produced by DiC Entertainment and Hallmark.

Beyond the animated series, two long lost live-action episodes of Rainbow Brite appeared well before its release, the first of which was entitled "Rainbow Brite: San Diego Zoo Adventure," from 1983. Within the episode, costumed actors tell a story about zoo animals losing their color due to Murky and Lurky, as well as their ultimate plot to steal Rainbow Brite's color belt. A second episode was entitled "Rainbow Brite: Mighty Monstromurk Menace," and was released that same year.
