One of several western-themed animated space operas (the others being Galaxy Rangers, Bravestarr, and Silverhawks to an extent), Saber Rider and the Star Sherrifs presented a future world where humans have colonized on various planets, creating a new fronier for mankind. It follows Earth's Cavalry Command - a massive police force both on land and in space that kept law and order. Command members included captain Saber Rider - who spoke with a British accent and rode upon his robotic horse Steed, racing enthusiast Fireball - the short tempered and youngest member, Colt - a sharpshooter and bounty hunter, and April Eagle - the only female member who has a robotic horse similar to that of Saber Rider, named Nova.

Foes included the Outriders, a gang of strange life forms from the Vapor Zone. These beings slid into Earth's realm from their own dimension to conquer it. While they can take a chosen human form and do not need to breathe, their lives depend on the presence of water. Governed by Nemesis, a bizzare humanoid wearing a skull-like mask, the Outriders included Jesse Blue - a former Cavelry Command student turned sinister after being rejected by April Eagle, Vanquo - a bleak faced adversary wearing a sombrero and having a quick draw, and Gattler - another masked and mysterious villain.

A plot climax occurs during each episode when the Cavalry Command requires some additional muscle - prompting their battleship to change forms into a massive robot known as Ramrod. Its rival is the Outrider robot called Renegade. In battle mode, the Ramrod draws a massive handgun from its holster, and fires retractable chest-mounted cannons. Dispatched enemies simply revert back to the Vapor Zone, only to return again in the future.

World Events Productions released a limited number of "Saber Rider" episodes on DVD, in 2006.
