Introduced during the week of September 12, 1983 on the primetime
"CBS Saturday Morning Cartoon Preview Special" by actor Scott Baio,
Saturday Supercade was a short-lived animated series featuring segments
based on classic arcade games.
Each
episode began with a fully animated opening sequence. Before and
after commercial breaks, various custom-made show ID's ("Saturday
Supercade will return after these messages," "And now,
back to our show") were displayed, mimicing games such as Defender
and Space Invaders. Throughout
a one-hour running, four cartoon segments for 97 total individual
episodes: Frogger, Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., and Q*Bert were
featured in one sitting. In the later seasons, Pitfall and Frogger
were dropped from the rotation as new segments were aired: Kangaroo
and Space Ace. All of these series were slapstick-type animations
geared towards younger children, with the exception of Space Ace.
Additionally, each individual show had its own theme song and introduction.
Frogger:
Frogger [Bob Sarlatte], a reporter for the Swamp Gazette, is sent
on field reports around the swamp with colleagues Fanny Frog [B.J.
Ward] and Shellshock Turtle [Marvin Kaplan], usually resulting in
trouble.
Donkey
Kong: Dim witted Donkey Kong [Soupy Sales] escapes from
the circus and is pursued by Mario [Peter Cullen] and his main interest,
Pauline [Judy Strangis], of whom Donkey Kong also has a crush on.
The slow yet evasive Kong proves to be a difficulty for Mario time
and time again.
Donkey
Kong, Jr: This segment focuses on Donkey Kong's son, Donkey
Kong Jr. [Frank Welker] who is searching for his lost father due
to the circus escape. Aided by human friend Bones [Bart Braverman],
the two look for clues.
Q*Bert:
With a 50's theme, this segment about video game character Q*Bert
[Billy Bowles] features the square-hopping creature and his group
of friends: Q*Ball [Frank Welker], Q*Tee [Robbie Lee], Q*Val [Robbie
Lee], Q*Bit [Dick Beals], Q*Bertha [Julie McWhirter] and Q*Mungus
[Frank Welker] through their school adventures, and exploits with
bullies such as Coilee Snake [Frank Welker], Viper [Julie McWhirter],
Ugg [Frank Welker], Wrong Way [Frank Welker] and Sam Slick [Frank
Welker].
Pitfall:
Main character Pitfall Harry [Robert Ridgely], Neice Rhonda [Noelle
North] and cowardly cat, Quick Claw [Kenneth Mars] search ancient
ruins for treasure while avoiding ancient traps.
Kangaroo:
This segment focuses on a young kangaroo, Joey [David Mendenhall]
with siblings Sidney [Marvin Kaplan] and Katy [Mea Martineau], as
they lived in a zoo and dealt with the obnoxious Monkey Biz Gang
[voiced by Frank Welker].
Space
Ace: Dexter [Sparky Marcus], the valiant swashbuckler,
defends the galaxy along with love interest Kimberly [Nancy Cartwright]
from the evil Commander Borf [Arthur Burghardt] and his Infanato
Ray.
