Taking place in a distant galaxy called Limbo, an intergalactic threat known as Mon-Star [Earl Hammond] and his henchmen break free from a prison planet. Commander Stargazer sends a signal to Earth Command announcing the prison break, and a group of heroes known as the Silverhawks are assembled by the Interplanetary Control Force. The Silverhawks - cyborgs whose bodies were altered with robotics, were led by Jonathan "Quicksilver" Quick [Peter Newman], his mechanical hawk Tally Hawk, Emily "Steelhart" Hart [Maggie Wheeler] and Will "Steelwill" Hart [Bob McFadden] - both of which had mechanical heart replacements, Bluegrass [Larry Kenney] - a cowboy with a sonic-blasting guitar, and Copper Kid - a mathematician from the planet of Mimes.

Mon-Star alters his body with the help of a "Moonstar", and leads a group that includes the circular-saw laden Buzzsaw, Mo-le-cu-lar [Doug Preis] - a shapeshifting undercover operative, Mumbo Jumbo [Peter Newman] - a metallic centaur, Melodia [Maggie Wheeler] - who attacks with powerful sonic notes, Yes-man - Mon-Star's unintelligent brute, Pokerface [Larry Kenney] - a greedy robotic being with slot machines for eyes, Zero - a crafty criminal who steals memories with a special prod, and Wind Hammer [Doug Preis] - who uses a tuning fork weapon to manipulate weather.

The Silverhawks travel in the Mirage - a space vehicle with 5 cockpits that detach (excluding the main cockpit, which holds pilot Bluegrass). With their retracting metallic masks and wings, the Silverhawks can soar through space on their own, as well as experience super speed and strength.

Episodes concluded with a simple science quiz presented by Copper Kid, who would choose the correct answer on his computer screen.
