Drawn in similar fashion to "Voltron: Defender of the Universe," this very short-lived animated series followed an American military space division as they thwarted the domination plans of an alien threat led by pink skinned Emperor Dark [Neil Munro] and his Shadow Force. Starcom was broken down into various units, namely the Astro Marines (ground forces), Star Wing (pilots), and Starbase Command (battlestation operatives).

The Astro Marines consisted of Col. Paul "Crowbar" Corbin [Robert Cait] - the fearless leader wielding a railgun, Capt. Vic "Dakota" Hayes - driver of the Laser R.A.T. assault vehicle, Capt. Rick Ruffing - M-16 Rail Gunner driver and anti-armor specialist, Staff Sgt. Champ O'Ryan - recovery leader and H.A.R.V.-7 driver, Sgt. Bill Travers - anti-armor gunner, squad leaders Sgt. Hector Morales and Sgt. Victor Rivera, Pfc. John "Cowboy" Jefferson - combat trooper, and Pfc. Al "Cannon" Evans - bazooka/gunner.

Starbase Command included leader Col. John "Slim" Griffin [Philip Akin], Capt. Pete Yablonsky, Maj. Tony Barona, Starbase station chief Sgt. Maj. Bull Gruff, fuel tech Pfc. Shawn Reed, and weapons specialist Pfc. Rusty Caldwell.

The Star Wing pilots were Col. James "Dash" Derringer [Rob Cowan], bomber pilot Capt. Rip Malone, Lt. Bob T. Rogers - navigator, astro-fighter pilot Lt. Tom "Bandit" Waldron, Starhawk pilot Lt. Jeff "Bronx" Carrier, weapons chief Sgt. Red Baker, Sgt. Ed Kramer - gunner, and Sgt. Bob Anders Battlecrane pilot.

The Shadow Force enemy was large in number, consisting of aliens, humans and robots. Led by Emperor Dark and travelling in the massive Shadow Base ship, they included invasion leader General Von Dar [Marvin Goldhar], Capt. Mace - Shadow Vampire pilot, Maj. Klag [Dan Hennessey] - Shadow Bat pilot, Maj. Romak [Louis DiBianco] - Shadow Invader driver, Lt. Magg - Shadow Parasite pilot, gunners Sgt. Von Rodd and Sgt. Hack, weapon specialist Sgt. Ramor, attack leader Sgt. Borek, trooper and anti-armor Cpl. Slash, and gunner Cpl. Storn. Robot forces, eerily similar to a cross between Boba Fett of Star Wars and the Cylons of Battlestar Galactica, included leader General Torvek [Robert Cait], Shadow Raider driver Capt. Battlecron-9, and gunner Cpl. Agon-6.

"Starcom" was sponsored by the Young Astronauts Council, and used as a marketing venue for raising interest in NASA.

While the television series remained a failure, the toyline suffered as well. However, it was vast and very inclusive, with dozens of action figures, vehicles, ships and playsets. Their unique feature included "Magna Lock" technology: special magnets that not only kept figures stationary on vehicles and playsets, but also activated various other features, such as lifts, elevators, and firing turrets.
