Very vaguely based upon the 1988 movie, this cartoon series featured
the repulsive ghost Beetlejuice [Stephen Ouimette] in his Neitherworld
exploits. His only friend on Earth, Lydia Deitz [Alyson Court],
a goth who came from a rather normal family, called upon Beetlejuice
by uttering his name three times. Beetlejuice took pleasure in haunting
people and causing trouble in the real world town of Peaceful Pines
- especially toward Lydia's unsuspecting parents: Charles Deetz
and her ditzy mother Delia Deetz.
The
show never spared a single "crunch" sound effect whenever
he bit into a roach (which usually crawled out of his hair whenever
he scratched his head). Back at home in the surreal looking Neitherworld,
each episode would feature a cutscene of some sort (usually when
Beetlejuice watches "a little TV", literally a 5"
tall TV set), the cartoon would cut to a stop-frame animation 'tv
commercial' that was created by animators at Calibre Digital Pictures.
Beetlejuice's main concern were the deadly tower-sized Sandworms,
drawn in alternating white and black stripes that are so well known
for Burton's style.
The
series spanned 4 seasons: first on ABC's Saturday morning lineup
in 1988, and concluding as a weekday afternoon program on FOX, up
until 1991. Episodes of the animated series "Beetlejuice"
appeared briefly on VHS home release.
