Dino-Riders was a weekday animated science fiction series about a galactic war that spilled over into the past during a time travel accident. Both warring sides tamed dinosaurs; the evil of the two sides imprisoned them with technological enhancements.

The show's slogan was "Harness the Power of Dinosaurs." During an intergalactic war between Valorians and the evil Rulons, a Space Time Energy Projector (acronym S.T.E.P.) was utilized, mistakenly sending the Valorians back in time to the prehistoric era. Using their AMP necklaces, which link thoughts amongst other living beings, they tame the local dinosaurs and are soon after attacked by their Rulon adversaries. With the use of "brain boxes," the Rulons savagely brainwash and encase dinosaurs in technologically enhanced parts for usage in war.

The series followed the paths of the good Valorian leader Questar [Dan Gilvezan], and his evil nemesis Krulos [Frank Welker] Questar is a peace loving, natural born leader who strives to develop a habitat on the prehistoric land in which his crew has crashlanded on. His people include the hearty warrior Gunnur [Peter Cullen], tactician Icon, the science-minded Turret, dinosaur trainer Tagg, Vector - who repairs their mechanical devices, the pilot Aero, Youngstar - the other airborne ace, Serena [Noelle North], a healer, and her blind grandfather Mind-Zei, who is endowed with powerful telepathic powers.

The Rulons, besides leader Krulos, include bizzare alien creatures who appear half man, half animal. Ant-like commander Antor [Peter Cullen] leads the ant army, Hammerhead [Charles Adler] leads the shark army, Rasp [Chris Latta] leads the snake army, and Krok is one of Krulo's most trusted minions.
