Walt Disney Television featured this long-lasting, well-written and beautifully colored series revolving around treasure hunting billionaire Scrooge McDuck [Alan Young] and nephews: Huey, Dewey and Louie [all voiced by Russi Taylor] in their 'round-the-globe treasure hunting adventures. Residing in his hometown of Duckburg, Scrooge lives in his luxurious manor, house-kept by his indifferent butler and babysitter Ms. Betina Beakley [Joan Gerber], the acting guardian of Webbigail Vanderquack [Russi Taylor] along with his three newphews. Other notable characters included the awful pilot, Launchpad McQuack [Terence McGovern] who later appeared as a character of the series "Darkwing Duck," the shy inventor Gyro Gearloose [Hal Smith] and the split personality of reporter Fenton Cracksell [Hamilton Camp] who wore a unicycled robotic suit and became the mediocre quasi-hero known as "Gizmoduck."

Beyond taking a dip in his multi-story high money bin, Scrooge defended his riches from jailbird Ma Beagle [June Foray] and her thuggish sons, the Beagle Boys, who consisted of Bigtime Beagle [Frank Welker], Bankjob Beagle [Peter Cullen], Bebop Beagle [Brian Cummings], Burger [Chuck McCann], Bouncer Beagle [Chuck McCann], Baggy Beagle [Frank Welker], and Babyface Beagle [Terence McGovern], each wearing their signature burglar masks and prison number plates. A few of those prison number plates had different styles to fit the character; such as Baggy's bent-corner plate, and Megabyte Beagle - who has a square root equation instead of a number.

Other characters appeared in Scrooge's adventures to hinder his path, such as his rifle-toting ex-girlfriend Glittering Goldie O'Glit [Joan Gerber], and con man Gladstone Gander [Rob Paulsen]. Scrooge's other concerns ranged from a variety of adversaries everywhere he went, from the sorceress Magica DeSpell [June Foray], to dastardly Black Pete [Will Ryan] and not to mention his biggest competitor and #2 richest duck in the world, kilt-wearing Flintheart Glomgold [Hal Smith]. On occasion, sea man Donald Duck would make an appearance while causing a catastrophe on the aircraft carrier he was stationed on, in which he could be found swabbing the deck.

Walt Disney Home Entertainment released the animated series of "Duck Tales" on DVD, in 2005.

Capcom spun off the Duck Tales series with a highly successful platform game for the NES in 1989, and a lesser-known sequel in 1993. The video game series was produced by the same team that had worked on the "Mega Man" game series.

Both Gladstone and Disney Comics produced comic books of the series, in 1989 and 1990, respectively.
