Following the Transformers series, Go-Bots were transforming vehicles from the planet Gobotron. When the denizens of Gobotron had vanished, only two humans remained: the Last Engineer and the Master Renegade. Creations of their efforts: the good Guardians were led by Leader-1 [Lou Richards], and included Turbo [Arthur Burghardt], Scooter, Small Foot, Ace, Beemer, Blaster, Mach-3, and Treads, to name a few. Their enemies, the Renegades, were led by Cy-Kill [Bernard Erhard] and included Cop-Tur [Bob Holt], Crasher [Marilyn Lightstone], Bladez, Spoiler, Twin Spin, Breez, and a multitude of others.

The Guardians were headquatered in the Command Center, a 4-legged robotic vehicle, and their nemesis Renegades' headquaters was the giant metallic Thruster. The children Matt Hunter [Morgan Paull] and A.J. Foster [Leslie Speights] befriended the Guardians on planet Earth.

A new series featuring brand new characters entitled the "Rock Lords" was released with a television movie special, "Go-Bots: Battle of the Rock Lords" in 1986. This series of characters, of whom simply changed form into rocks, had failed. The Go-Bots series itself was cancelled in 1987.
