In this vivid, colorful space saga narrated by voice talent Gary Owens, scientist Rob Simmons [Barry Gordon] leads a team of personable robots in secret missions to thrwart the attacks of intergalactic threat Shadow, and its cyborg leader Umbra [voiced by Bill Martin] - a bizzare 5-eyed monstrosity living with the Shadow Star. Using various shadow agents such as shape-shifting alien Plasmus, mind-controlling braininac Mentalis, Doctor Phoenix - a cyborg scientist with an exposed metallic brain in a glass shell, circus boss Ringmaster, and Dragos & Drax - two brainwashing robotic rockers, Umbra seeks to destroy the Orbots and continue its hostile takeover of Earth.

The Orbots include Tor [Bill Martin], Bort [Jim MacGeorge], miniscule co-pilot Ohno [Noelle North], dainty Bo [Sherry Alberoni] and Boo [Julie Bennett] who vaguely resembled C3PO of Star Wars, and Crunch [Don Messick], a the metal chomping robot with an insatiable appetite. The six Orbots possess the ability to 'transform' one super robot: Tor/Torso, Bort/Leg, Crunch/leg, Bo/Arm, Boo/Arm, and Ohno acting as the "starter" from Simmon's control craft, which became the last "piece" of the robot torso - a trait painfully similar to "Voltron."

Each episode began with a quick 15 second opening preview with the same line: "Hi, this is Rob Simmons, leader of the Mighty Orbots...join us in some hot action, as we take on the evil forces of Umbra."
