My Little Pony was a syndicated, animated series. Trailblazed by
the television special "My Little Pony" on April 14, 1984, this
television series continued on by featuring a new character, Megan,
who travelled to Dream Valley to watch over the ponies. An additional
special entitled "Escape from Catrina" aired a year later. Consisting
of dozens of multi-colored ponies and unicorns living within the
Paradise Estate, each pony had itsown unique symbols displayed on
their side (similar to the unique patterns of the "Care Bears").
They were pestered by Captain Crabnasty [Peter Cullen] and the witch
Hydia [Cloris Leachman], and relied on each other's magical abilities
to save the day.
The
ponies existed as different types: traditional land-walking ponies,
flying pegasus ponies, magically teleporting unicorns, seahorse-like
sea ponies, and butterfly-like flutter ponies. Other characters
in the cartoon series included Spike, a harmless baby dragon adopted
by the ponies, and the Bushwoolies - reminiscent of the Star Trek
"tribbles," a group of multi-colored furballs.
The
1986 "My Little Pony: The Movie" was responsible for the release
of several new characters and songs. The television series spanned
several different formats, beginning in 1986 with "My Little Pony
'n Friends," an 18-episode series that spun off directly from the
television specials. In 1987, the series continued on with a second
series, including abridged episodes of other cartoons such as "Moon
Dreamers," "Potato Head Kids" and "Glo-Friends." The series was
later resurrected in 1992 with "My Little Pony Tales," a 24-episode
series removing the magic theme featured from the initial series,
and focusing more on relationships.
